Medical Services on Floating Hospital in Kei Island, South East Moluccas (September 25th-30th 2013)


On September 26 to 30, 2013, doctorSHARE had succesfully performed medical services in its Floating Hospital ( RSA ) dr . Lie Dharmawan, in Kei Islands, Southeast Moluccas, Indonesia. The medical services was conducted at two points, Small Kei Island and Great Kei Island, with the theme "Weaving Dreams with Love and Togetherness in East Indonesia".

DoctorSHARE fielded a team of volunteers of two surgeons, ten general practitioners, a student of the Faculty of Medicine, an anesthetic, and four non-medical volunteers who conducted major and minor surgeries inside the Floating Hospital, and performed general health examination on the shore. A presentation about health care and healthy life style also conducted in front of the local communities and students.

The first  medical point took place at the Small Kei Island succefully treated 13 surgery patients (both major and minor) and 277  general medical patients. Common most diseases found are ARI ( Acute Respiratory Infections ), gastrointestinal disorders , hypertension ( high blood pressure ), myalgia ( muscle pain ), and dermatitis ( skin disease ).

The health presentation activities took place in the same location with the theme "Clean and Healthy Behavior" attended by about 70 students, who were all enthusiastic and actively participate in this interactive event.

The second medical services took place at the Great Kei Island, successfully treated 38 surgery patients ( both major and minor ) and 112 general medical patients. Most diseases found include ARI ( Acute Respiratory Infection ), skin diseases ( limpetigo , tinea , and dermatitis ), gastritis (stomach problems ), and hypertension ( high blood pressure ).

Counseling presentation took place at SMAN 01 (Local High School) with the theme "I Know, I'm Proud , Prevent HIV/AIDS " in front of  enthusiastic 250 students. 

Overall, surgical services on both island successfully treated 51 patients inside the Floating Hospital. These were a new record number of surgical patients since the Floating Hospital were launced last March 2013. The type of major surgeries were varicocele hernia, acute exacerbation of chronic appendicitis, mamme fistula, and compartment syndrome. The type of minor surgeries including lipoma, aterom cysts, skin tags, ganglion, dermatoid cyst, papilloma, fibroma, and basalioma.

DoctorSHARE’s field coordinators for both medical services on the islands of Kei , dr. Sianly and dr. Karnel, said that all medical services in the region were right on target given the high enthusiasm of the people who came to register for surgeries and general examinations. Many of them who were constrained by geographical and financial issues, expressed their gratitude towards the free medical services.
